Hobbies
I like to read, fence (I am a member
at the Boston Fencing Club),
take pictures. I've been playing guitar for
some time but since I can't tell Mi from Fa it's hard to become really
good at it. Here's a short piece I recorded on my 4-track: "Jazz Session At Jericho" (found in a guitar
music for beginners book).
I'd like to learn to draw, here's a couple of attempts at drawing from
photographs: 1, 2.
Why
from photographs? Well, I couldn't subject innocent people to sitting
still for two hours, could I? :-)

Fencing
I fenced in Russia since I was 12 for six
years.
In March of 2000 I decided to come back - took a class in Boston Fencing Club
(mostly to learn the English terms :-), then became a member there.
My more or less significant achievements:
June 25th, 2000, Pomme de Terre at Brandeis University, Men's Foil
Unclassified (no rated fencers) - I won 5 out of 6
bouts in my pool and was seeded 5th in the Direct Elimination round. In
DE I won 3 bouts advancing to the semifinals where I lost to the guy
who won the whole thing. In addition to a few prizes the 3rd place (out
of 49) gave me an E rating.
Update: I switched from foil to epee and got an E01 rating
(placed
3rd in several tournaments).
Update: I have a C! (1st place in a tournament
in Scituate).
7/13/2003 Update: I placed 3rd in the 2003 Bay State Games, got "B
rated" :)

Philosophy
My views on ethics, politics and religion can be summed up by
these quotes. Yes, I am a libertarian.
Sin lies only in
hurting
other people unnecessarily. All other "sins" are invented nonsense.
R. Heinlein
My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of
man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of
his life,
with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his
only absolute
Ayn Rand
After reading The
Fountainhead,
Atlas Shrugged, Anthem,
We
the Living, early fiction and a whole lot of her non-fiction my
brain cells are no longer in disarray they've been in for more than 20
years. It is interesting - I had to leave Russia to discover Alissa
Rozenbaum (she was born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1905 and came to
America in 1926 where she changed her name to Ayn Rand).
Favorite Authors and Books
Favorite Movies
The Edge
(I like Anthony Hopkins and it's also an excellent illustration of
Rand's quote above), Pulp
Fiction (you have to see it just for the music :-), Scent of a Woman (I like
Al Pacino), The Silence of
the Lambs, The
Professional, Good Will
Hunting , Fargo, As Good As It Gets, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest,
